HFO-1234yf
“Snow type” is a colloquial term for automotive air conditioning refrigerant (refrigerant). 1234yf (full name R-1234yf or HFO-1234yf) is currently the mainstream fourth-generation environmentally friendly refrigerant in the global automotive industry, primarily used to replace the previous generation of R-134a.
By 2026, this refrigerant had become the standard equipment for the vast majority of newly produced passenger vehicles, particularly new energy vehicles exported to the EU, North America, and the Chinese market.

1. Core advantage: extremely high environmental friendliness
- Low GWP value: Its global warming potential (GWP) is only 1 or lower, whereas the GWP of the previous generation R-134a is as high as 1430. This means that its impact on climate warming has been reduced by over 99.9%.
- Zero ODP value: It has no destructive effect on the atmospheric ozone layer at all.
- Short atmospheric lifespan: The residence time of 1234yf in the atmosphere is only about 11-12 days, whereas R-134a can last for up to 13-14 years.
-
2. Technical characteristics
- Slightly flammable (A2L level): Unlike the completely non-flammable R-134a, 1234yf is classified as slightly flammable. Therefore, vehicle air conditioning systems adapted to this refrigerant (such as the HS-S38F motor you mentioned earlier) usually require special spark-proof or sealing designs.
- Compatibility: Although its pressure characteristics are similar to R-134a, it cannot be directly charged into older R-134a systems in vehicles. The charging port connectors of the two systems have different designs (fool-proof design), and require specialized pressure gauges and charging machines.
-
3. Market status in 2026
- Penetration: By 2026, with the intensification of environmental regulations, new vehicles produced by mainstream global automakers (including Tesla, BYD, Volkswagen, etc.) have essentially transitioned to 1234yf.
- Price and Cost: Despite the superior environmental performance of 1234yf, its production process is complex, and its current market price is still significantly higher than that of traditional R-134a.
-
4. Maintenance tips
- Special tools: During maintenance, it is necessary to use a pressure gauge and vacuum pump equipped with a 1234yf special interface.
- Refrigeration oil: The 1234yf system typically uses specific PAG (polyalkylene glycol) or POE (polyol ester) lubricating oils, which cannot be mixed with older oils.
